Recitation of the rosary is a repetitive prayer which has existed since the 12th century. A Carthusian monk first introduced the rosary as we now know it with fifteen mysteries and one hundred and fifty "Hail Marys". Jean-Paul II added five new mysteries to the fifteen contemplated at each decade. The twenty mysteries are grouped as follows: The joyful mysteries (birth of Christ), the luminous mysteries (public ministry of Christ), the sorrowful mysteries (death of Christ) and the glorious mysteries (resurrection of Christ).
